Google Maps enhances dining experience by pairing food images with menu information.

Google is aiming to solve the problem of users struggling to identify dishes in restaurant images on Google Maps. They plan to enhance real food photos on their platform by providing important information like dish names and prices.

A visual feast and information

This feature is integrated into the Photos tab of restaurants, cafes and similar destinations. Now, when you swipe through the images, some come with a handy card at the bottom that reveals the name of the dish and its description in the menu.

Additional information such as price and labels such as “Popular” or “Vegetarian” are included with the food information. Google collects this data from both users and companies, analyzing the aggregated data to improve the user experience. However, it’s important to note that Google doesn’t independently check each attribute, 9to5Google reports.

User engagement and fixes

The Google Maps system is based on data uploaded directly by users and restaurants, which provides a wealth of information. If you ever notice an error in the dose name or information, you can suggest an edit for one of the following four reasons:

1. Suggest an edit

2. Wrong dish name

3. Offensive dish name

4. Food is not served here

Data Limitations and Enhancements

It is important to understand that the automatic identification of foods in Google Maps depends on the information provided by users or institutions. Because of this, the small information card may not be available for all images, especially those that lack user comments with relevant details or without direct feed from the restaurant.

This initiative is in line with Google’s ongoing efforts to improve its services and streamline the user experience. By minimizing the need to switch between multiple apps for information, Google aims to make dining on Google Maps a seamless and informative journey. This approach mirrors the company’s proprietary intelligent suggestion system for Google Messages, reinforcing its commitment to usability and innovation.
